MATCH PREVIEW ( TOTTENHAM - LIVERPOOL )
Tottenham Hotspur have had a solid if unspectacular start to the season. They opened the campaign with a hard fought 1-1 draw at Goodison Park, which is a good result considering Ross Barkley opened the scoring just five minutes into the game. The visiting Spurs side performed pretty well in possession in this game, although they failed to carve out the necessary openings to win the game, and it’s only thanks to Erik Lamela that they managed to gain a point.A match against Crystal Palace followed, and whilst they enjoyed less possession they certainly looked more threatening going forward than they did against Everton. It took a lot longer than expected for them to open the scoring though, with Victor Wanyama’s first goal for his new club sealing the three points with just eight minutes to spare. This is a fairly good start to the season from Spurs, who narrowly missed out on the Premier League title last season. An end of season collapse resulted in them dropping out of 2nd place as well as their North London rivals Arsenal pipped them to the runners up spot. Spurs, due to their squad lacking in depth, generally perform poorly in the Premier League when they are involved in the Champions League. However, their European campaign doesn’t begin for a while yet so we are expecting to see them gain some valuable points before the group stages kick off.
Liverpool, just two gameweeks into the new season, have already endured the highs and lows of unpredictable Premier League. They opened their campaign with a thrilling 4-3 win at the Emirates, with them surviving a late onslaught after being comfortably in front earlier in the match. What followed was a dismal display of football as they lost 2-0 at the newly promoted Burnley. The visitors had a ridiculous 81% of possession throughout the match but failed to carve out clear cut openings on goal, and their out of form defence couldn’t stop an early Sam Vokes goal or the following Andre Gray goal that made it 2-0. Liverpool did manage to regain some pride with their 5-0 hammering of Burton in midweek though as Divock Origi, Roberto Firmino, and Daniel Sturridge all got on the scoresheet. The high scoring result against Arsenal was almost expected due to both teams’ problems at the back, but Burnley proved resolute in defenceand made life extremely difficult for Liverpool. Tottenham Hotspur will bemore attack focused than Burnley, but their defence is much better than both Arsenal’s and Burnley’s. This could test Liverpool’s cutting edge again, and although the likes of Christian Eriksen and Harry Kane aren’t finding the net at the moment Spurs have still been managing to nick a goal.
Head - To - Head
Liverpool have won five of their last seven meetings with Tottenham Hotspur, but each of the last two have ended all square.
